Plan Tucson 2025 implements the Sonoran Desert Conservation Plan

Over the past few months, we have advocated for new, stronger conservation guidelines in Tucson’s Plan Tucson 2025, the city’s development blueprint for the next decade.

With support from city planners, council members, and Mayor Romero, many of our recommendations were adopted into this plan. We are most excited to have introduced a new policy that applies Pima County’s Conservation Lands System (CLS) — a conservation tool in the Sonoran Desert Conservation Plan — in the City of Tucson!

If voters approve Plan Tucson 2025 in November, the CLS is another tool that the City will use to protect biologically rich lands and inform responsible development. This is more than two decades in the making!

Other recommendations of ours were included as well, such as:

  • Defining natural open space as a distinct type of open space
  • Linking land use issues to the city’s extreme heat goals
  • Defining wildlife corridors and crossings
  • Strengthening language around the City’s outdoor lighting code and its importance

Special thanks to the City of Tucson’s Mayor and Council and city planners!
