SUMMARY:Desert Fence Busters
DESCRIPTION:Get your gloves and wire cutters ready! We’ll be working on removing stretches of outdated and dangerous barbed wire fencing with the Desert Fence Busters. \nOrganizers will provide all the necessary tools as well as coffee\, snacks\, water\, and Gatorade during breaks. Please bring a re-useable water bottle and coffee cup. We recommend you bring a lunch. \n\nYou can sign up today and learn more information at the Arizona Game and Fish Department website. \n\nHOW TO SIGN UP:  You will need to create an account with the Arizona Game and Fish volunteer portal (if you don’t have one already) and then sign up for this specific event.  \n1. After navigating to the event sign-up page\, click the “Respond” button in the top right corner. \n2. Click “Sign Up” to create an account and follow the required steps.  \n3. Once your account is created\, including signing the volunteer registration form\, you will be sent back to the main sign-up page. Scroll down below the photo to the section titled “Shifts.”  \n4. Click the “Respond Individually” button and sign up for the event.  \n*Please Note* Due to logistical constraints\, this Desert Fence Busters event is being hosted by Pima County instead of Arizona Game and Fish Department. Sign-ups will be hosted on the AZGFD website for simplicity\, but it should be noted that participation in this event will be as Pima County volunteers\, rather than as AZGFD volunteers. \nFor folks that have not participated in one of our Desert Fence Buster Fence Removal days before\, we encourage you to check out this orientation step through the process: DESERT FENCE BUSTERS. This is not a pre-requisite to participate\, but it is helpful context on what to expect from these events. \n\nWant to learn more about the Desert Fence Busters in general? Check out this summary of their accomplishments since 2021: Desert Fence Busters – Coalition for Sonoran Desert Protection

SUMMARY:Coffee and chat: Share ideas for CSDP's next strategic plan
DESCRIPTION:Please join us to chat about the Coalition for Sonoran Desert Protection’s next strategic plan\, which we’re just starting to draft. \nOur very first plan was launched in 2020 after we officially became a 501(c)(3) following years of support and sponsorship from Sky Island Alliance. You can check out that plan here. It’s now time for an update to it! \nAll ideas are welcome — we want to hear from you on what you feel are strategic priorities for: \n\nThe desert in Southern Arizona;\nOur community and region\, as it continues to grow; and\nOur organization.\n\nWe’ll have a few prompts for you to consider\, too — just to help the ideas flow. \nGrab yourself a coffee\, tea\, and a snack and pull up a chair to chat. This is a casual chance to check in with the team and is open to all. If you haven’t met our Co-Executive Director Kate\, who joined last fall\, this is also a chance to share your story and views with her. \nOur team will be in the Cafe Passe courtyard from 10-11am. We hope to see you there! \nCan’t make it but have ideas? Email us at admin@sonorandesert.org. \n

SUMMARY:Buffelgrass pull in Ironwood Forest National Monument
DESCRIPTION:Join the Coalition for Sonoran Desert Protection and the Friends of Ironwood Forest for a hands-on buffelgrass pull at Ironwood Forest National Monument. \nThis is a fantastic opportunity to experience the beautiful monument and help protect it from a dangerous invasive grass\, while working as part of a fun group. Buffelgrass is an incredibly invasive\, non-native grass that outcompetes native plants and is a fire hazard for the Sonoran Desert. \nWHEN:  Sunday\, March 22 from 7:30AM-11AM \nWe will meet at 7:30AM at the Marana Regional Airport\, then carpool to the work site. We will work until around 11AM but may finish earlier depending on the heat. Plan for a 45-minute drive from Central Tucson. \nNo experience needed and all tools will be provided\, as well as lots of snacks to fuel this hard work! \nSign up here!\nThe Ironwood Forest National Monument (IFNM) supports vast biodiversity\, preserves ancient archaeological sites\, and provides cherished opportunities for outdoor recreation. Alongside our partners Friends of Ironwood Forest and several others\, we are monitoring threats from the Administration against six national monuments\, including against IFNM – indications that federal officials are considering shrinking boundaries\, weakening protections\, or opening them to mining. \nYou won’t want to miss an opportunity to visit the monument for yourself and help play a part in protecting it! \nThis project is funded in part by Tucson Electric Power (TEP).
