Proposal to Pima County for the Conservation Management of an AZ Preserve

The Coalition's proposal to Pima County's Conservation Acquisition Commission for the establishment and management of an A7 Preserve comprised of habitat restoration; reintroduction of native species; and an integrated recreational system, including the creation of "recreation zones."

January 3, 2005

William Roe, Chair
Conservation Acquisition Commission
c/o Nicole Fyffe
130 W. Congress, 10th Floor
Tucson, AZ 85701

Dear Mr. Roe and Commission Members:

The Board of Supervisors has requested that the Conservation Acquisition Commission make recommendations on County management of the recently-acquired A7 Ranch property. The Coalition for Sonoran Desert Protection is very interested in having Pima County implement conservation management of this property, effectively managing the property as a preserve. This property provides an excellent opportunity to further the goals of the Sonoran Desert Conservation and Multiple Species Conservation plans.

The Coalition for Sonoran Desert Protection submits the attached considerations and recommendations for establishment and management of an A7 Preserve comprised of the following elements: habitat restoration; reintroduction of native species; and an integrated recreational system, including the creation of "recreation zones."

The Coalition also recommends that Pima County solicit input from conservationists, biologists, user groups, and others to more fully flesh out this conceptual proposal. A detailed management plan resulting from such a process could create a model county park that would provide significant ecological, social, recreational, and economic benefits to Pima County and its residents.

Thank you for your consideration of the Coalition's proposal. I look forward to working with Commission members and county staff on implementation of this planning process.

Sincerely,

Carolyn Campbell, Executive Director

cc: Honorable Chair and Members, Pima County Board of Supervisors
Chuck Huckelberry, County Administrator
John Bernal, Deputy County Administrator, Public Works
